Tougher penalties for teacher student sex coming.
Currently there are no special sanctions for teachers who commit sex acts with students. That’s all about to change if the Florida legislature passes any of a number of bills this year. Existing crimes would receive enhanced penalties for those in authority positions over the students. This includes teachers, coaches, counselors, and volunteers. It would change some second degree felonies punishable with up to 15 year prison terms to first degree felonies facing 30 years in prison. The number of teacher-student sex crimes have risen over the years. In the past couple of years teachers have been sentenced anywhere from two years house arrest to fifteen years in prison for sex crimes against students.
